Chapter 16
“Once we check on the stone, we need to get back to my mother’s,” Grayson said as they entered the exhibit room.
Neala nodded and examined the stone. “Seems to be intact. I worry more with each day.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll see to it that you and that stone get safely on the plane back to Ireland,” Grayson assured her as she glanced around the large room. “It sure is quiet in here.”
“The last day of the exhibit is today. They open the doors at eleven. We’ve got about an hour.”
From behind them, they heard Phelan’s voice. “It should be a good turnout for the last day. So I’m told.”
Grayson and Neala turned around. “I’m hoping it is,” Neala said with a smile. “But I don’t mind sayin’, I can’t wait to get home.”
Grayson watched Phelan as he smiled and nodded in agreement. “I, too, long to be back in Ireland, Neala. I’ve been away far too long.” Grayson heard the pensive tone in his baritone voice.
“Miss the Ole Sod, Mr. Tynan?” Grayson asked.
Phelan raised a dark eyebrow. “When was the last time you’ve been to Ireland, Detective?”
Grayson shrugged. “Quite some time.” Suddenly, the disjointed and meaningless images flashed through her mind. She shook her head and looked at Phelan, who was watching her intently.
Neala glanced at Grayson, who was frowning as she put a hand to her temple. Her fingers lightly traced the heavy stitches on her brow.
“Did you have an accident, Detective MacCarthaigh?” Phelan asked.
“Yes, police business,” Grayson said with a tone of dismissal. “Will you be here for the final day?”
“I would love to, but my business needs some attention, which has been lacking of late.”
“You’re not staying?” Neala asked. “I would think that you would want to stay to the end, especially since you’ve done so much.”
Phelan bowed slightly. “I am but a servant of Ireland.”
Grayson thought he sounded sarcastic but said nothing.
“Well, Ireland certainly appreciates your service,” Neala assured him. “I honestly don’t know how we would have done all this without you.”
“And now we need to get this exhibit back to its home. So much needs to be done and the time is—” He stopped abruptly.
Grayson raised an eyebrow. “The time is…?”
Seemingly collecting himself, Phelan grinned. “The time is now for Ireland, Detective MacCarthaigh.”
For a moment, Grayson regarded Phelan Tynan; it seemed he was doing the same to her. There was something about this man that Grayson just did not trust, and she didn’t know why. She looked into his dark eyes and wondered…. “Mr. Tynan, what business are you in that you can afford to give away so much?”
His eyes narrowed for a split second before he answered. “I own Cian Enterprises. I buy and I sell and I invest, then buy and sell all over again.”
“You must do it well.”
“It’s a gift,” he said lightly, took out his card, and handed it to Grayson.
Taking the card, Grayson noticed the information was in Gaelic. “Kinda hard for the average person to read,” she said and looked up.
